Fixing Feed-Problems in 4.0.1 [update]
Important Update: The previously available patch would return empty feeds more often than without the patch and made the problem worse in some circumstances. Sorry about the inconvenience. Please download and use the updated, patched files below.
In certain circumstances, it is possible that visitors may experience problems with Textpattern’s feeds (rss and atom as well). Your installation is likely affected if PHP is running as CGI on your server. The problems are non-critical, meaning no information gets lost and nobody misses any entries. However some clients (Aggregators) may show error-messages when the feed has not changed.
To fix this please download the following two files and replace the existing ones in textpattern/publish/. To confirm that you uploaded the correct file into the correct directory, you can check high level diagnostics (admin-tab) for the following lines:
/publish/atom.php: r880M (21182e0aa05b2e0d0741a9e0de9ec1ba)
/publish/rss.php: r880M (3f08df232b1ca21af0e6762c267a1183)

Though given that the bug has been there for a long time and only recently reported, I am not sure if it’s absolutely necessary for everyone to implement it – as I said the main function of the feed was not impaired, only annoying error-messages may have appeared for som e people (depending on the client).

are these files still available anywhere? the download links don’t seem to be working.

No, they are not available for download any longer, because the fix has been incorporated into 4.0.2 (and all following releases). To fix your problem (and lots of other bugs and a few potential security issues) you should update to 4.0.3 – the sooner, the better.
